Animal Rescue

Appalachian Guard Animal Rescue Unit (ARU) is a dedicated branch of Appalachian Guard committed to protecting animal lives during disasters and emergencies. Our primary mission is to locate, extract, and transport animals from harm’s way during natural disasters such as floods, wildfires, hurricanes, and other large-scale events. These situations often place animals in immediate danger, and many are left behind or unable to escape on their own. Our team is trained to act quickly, safely, and with compassion, ensuring that animals. whether domestic, exotic, or wild are not forgotten when disaster strikes.

When we are not deployed to disaster zones, our work continues on the local level. ARU maintains an active animal rescue presence in the region, specializing in the care and rehabilitation of exotic and wildlife species. While there are many wonderful organizations in our area that focus on dogs and cats, we saw a need to step in and care for the animals who are often overlooked. From reptiles and birds to injured wildlife and small exotic mammals, our rescue center is a safe haven for the creatures that require more specialized attention. Even during active disaster responses, we never leave them behind. A rotating team of staff and volunteers remains on-site to provide daily care, enrichment, and medical attention to the animals in our facility. We believe every life matters, and that belief fuels everything we do.

At the heart of ARU's field response capabilities is our specialized team known as the WildGuard. WildGuard is composed of experienced animal responders who are cross-trained in multiple roles and prepared to handle the most dangerous and complex rescue situations
