Who we are
Appalachian Guard was born from a deep commitment to the people of the Appalachian Mountains. Our founder, Damion Buchanan, born and raised in Newland, NC, isn't just a name – he's a neighbor, a friend, and someone who has spent years quietly addressing the needs of his community, often using his own resources to make a difference. For Damion, service isn't a slogan, it's a way of life.
With over six years of experience in healthcare, Damion understands the challenges people face. He's been a constant presence for those battling addiction, not only responding to mental health crises – whether violent or not – with compassion and understanding, but also providing the ongoing support needed to truly recover. He's helped countless individuals find the strength and safety they need to overcome addiction, offering continued guidance and encouragement even after they've achieved sobriety. Beyond that, he's provided transportation for those who had nowhere to turn, helped repair homes, vehicles and even opened his doors to provide shelter for those in need.
When Hurricane Helene brought devastation to the region, Damion's dedication to service reached new heights. Even as floodwaters overwhelmed his own home, damaging his tools, garage, and wood shed, Damion put his personal losses aside. He didn't wait for someone else to step in. Instead, he went out daily, his only truck bearing the brunt of the treacherous conditions, to help those who were affected even worse. Alongside a network of friends and strangers united by a common purpose, he worked tirelessly to clear debris-strewn roads, deliver emergency supplies to those cut off, and transport people to safety, his truck sustaining substantial damage in the process.
Our mission is to empower individuals facing challenges and provide support in times of need. Whether navigating difficult life circumstances, disaster, addiction, winter storms, floods, or facing mental health struggles, we will be there. Appalachian Guard continues that legacy of compassion and action.
We are on the ground providing vital disaster relief and support to those affected by the storm, ensuring no one faces this challenge alone.
